Our Story
It all began quite unexpectedly and very naturally in 2020. I, Tobias Schmitt, was brought old wine barrels and asked: "Do you have an idea what could be made from this wood? We would give it to you for free." They knew I had a large workshop and was passionate about working with wood.
Thus, the idea and the story of rheinhessen_wooden_art were born.
From Hobby to Craft
In the beginning, it wasn't a business, but a hobby. The product range was manageable, focusing on wine accessories. I crafted wine bottle holders, coasters for glasses, and holders for wine glasses. Items that enhance wine culture and create a cozy atmosphere.
Over time, the product range grew. Candle holders, Advent candle holders, and my own Advent set design with a wooden stand and glasses were added. These sets are versatile, suitable for candles, as well as for jams or sauces.
Wooden stars in various sizes became a real bestseller. A simple yet expressive decoration that many people appreciate.
A New Hobby – Beekeeping
In 2022, another hobby was added: beekeeping. A demanding yet fascinating craft that not only yields sweet results but also valuable beeswax for candles.
In 2024, I started selling my own honey and handcrafted wax candles for the first time. A special step – and a very successful one at that.
A Family Project
Also in 2024, my wife Kateryna joined the project. With her ideas, creativity, and hand-painted decorations, she brought a whole new dimension to our products. Together, we significantly expanded our product range, especially in the area of seasonal and Christmas decorations.
But it doesn't stop there. We are constantly evolving, trying new things, and always generating new ideas.
The Third Life of Wood
We live in the heart of one of Germany's most famous and largest wine regions, and this is precisely reflected in each of our products. The wine barrels we work with come directly from our region and have already had a long journey. Their first life was spent as a tree in nature. Their second life was as a wine barrel, in which regional wine matured for many years. And finally, their third life begins as a unique, handcrafted product from our workshop.
The wood still carries the scent of wine and preserves its own history and character. We don't fell new trees; instead, we give used wine barrels a new life. That's why our products are sustainable upcycled unique pieces, crafted with respect for nature, material, and tradition.
With Attention to Detail
Previously, we primarily attended markets and craft fairs, presenting our products in person. Today, we have consciously decided to create our own online shop to make our work accessible beyond the borders of our region.
Every single piece is handmade with great love for our hobby. For us, it's more than just work. It's passion, history, and appreciation for the material.
Welcome to rheinhessen_wooden_art. Where old wine barrels begin their third life.
